PhD position in Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (LMV), on high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis of new materials related to the production of green energy

The Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (LMV), Université Clermont Auvergne, Clermont ferrand, France, is seeking applications for a three year Ph.D. student position. The project is part of a project focusing on high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis of new materials related to the production of green energy. The successful candidate will be involved in experimental work including the synthesis of novel compounds using multi-anvil presses, chemical and structural characterization of products using XRD and structure refinement, TEM, Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe, and elemental analysis, as well as the measurement of mechanical, optical, and optoelectronic properties of the products.

Prospective candidates must possess a robust foundation in either condensed matter physics, materials science, mineralogy, or solid-state chemistry, along with a strong enthusiasm for experimental research. Hands-on skills in handling small/microscopic objects and a dedication to precise work are beneficial.

A master's degree or equivalent diploma enabling doctoral work in a European university in the aforementioned scientific fields is required. While the working language is English, knowledge of French is advantageous. The salary is competitive and typical for France, and the earliest recruitment date is September-October 2024. Applications will be reviewed from September 1st, 2024 until the position is filled, and applicants should provide one to two reference contacts.

The majority of the work will be conducted at the national multi-anvil facility at LMV located in Clermont ferrand, France, with some of the analytical work taking place at the Laboratoire des Sciences des Procédés et des Matériaux (LSPM) of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) located on the campus of the University Sorbonne Paris Nord. The project will be carried out under the co-supervision of Dr. Geeth Manthilake and Dr. Andreas Zerr.

Interested candidates are invited to send their résumé, including a CV, a brief description of their experiences/education, and PDF copies of their diploma to Dr. Geeth Manthilake via email at geeth.mantilake@uca.fr.
